Signing Off

THIS IS MY LAST POST ON THIS BLOG. (update: CLICK HERE to visit my new blog)

I have decided to do so earlier today. I will stop blogging here. It's kind of a retirement of this blog, which is only 1 year old and has less than 200 posts. I will not delete this blog. It would stay as it is today.

I will blog again for sure, but on a new and better blog :-). I can't tell you when exactly it's going to happen. You are welcome to check my flickr album from time to time so you know I am not hiding or crying on my bed...

You could say that my own blog changes me and the way I see / do things. I have enjoyed the whole experience very much! I also enjoy your visits, comments, and companions.

So thanks and bye. See you soon!

我剛剛打了104,告訴接電話的小姐：「小姐，謝謝您的服務，我是一個一般用戶，我知道你們都很辛苦，但是即將被公司賣掉了。我覺得你們中華電信員工應該積極參與工會的罷工行動，我們都會支持你們！」那位小姐先是偷笑，然後有點生氣地說：「這是查號台耶！」我說，「我知道啊，可是私有化之後查號台人員一定被精簡，你們的工作壓力又會更大！」這次，她笑得很燦爛，說：「謝謝你喔！」她知道我在說什麼....打104、打105、打112、英語打106、國際台100、長途台108、服務電話123、行動電話業務0800-080-090、、、任何一枝有人服務的電話都可以打~~by 陳信行 世新大學社會發展研究所助理教授

我想了一下. 我不會打這種電話. 這樣很消極. 因為資方是政府, 實際出錢的是一般大眾小老百姓, we are the boss! 所以要不然我就改用民營固網, 錢不要給中華電賺走, 讓它"必須"要民營化, 而不是被財團分贓; 不然我就要求我選區的立委, 先把中華電向日本NTT一樣切割, 再看各事業體如何找到自己的謀生之道來存活; 各事業體分別獨立後,說不定還會擴編, 製造就業機會!

大有為的政府....不然你就姑且相信它, 給主政者機會, 證明他的名智或是愚蠢; 在這種時刻, 搞軟性訴求太沒意思.

Blogosphere. Tags

Dave Sifry, CEO of Technorati, published the semi-annual blogosphere report. (read part one | two | three). The report showed that in a nearly half-year span, the number of blogs doubled. Technorati is tracking more than 14 million blogs.

I then asked Wretch the same question and he replied that www.wrech.cc has achieved more than double. Good for him!

Dave said on the weekend, posts are made around 5~10% less than the weekly average. Good to know about this figure. I've found myself post less, yet read more blog posts over the weekend than weekdays. He also suggested "Tagging is growing in languages outside of English as well, including high adoption rates in Asian languages like Chinese and Japanese". Anyone smells that...? Tag could be one of the future revenue source for portal / search engine like google.

(zh-tw)有一點是可以去觀察的: 其實對於越來越多自發性的Tagging, 不論是在Blog上, 還是在Flickr照片上, 表示人們都希望被找到, 被看到, 進而有更多的互動.

There's also an apple-like video clip made for this blogosphere report. Fun to watch. I expected a text cloud (representing the tag-o-sphere of all blogs) at the end of the film but a statis chart....

WORLD OF CAVIAR

A dear friend of mine who lives in NYC and is the the Ph.D. candidate in Columbia U. started a blog called WORLD OF CAVIAR. I did not realize until today that it IS the blog he initiatied for old pals.

I very much enjoy reading this lovely blog, mostly written in Chinese. There's also a lot for a bunch of friends can write up together by using Blog / RSS / Tag systems. A lot more to do and have fun with.

I am glad to be invited as one of the contributors but did not have the chance to do so. From now on who ever wish to know the tender side of my human nature, you'll find it there :-)

Peter Jennings

Peter Jennings辭世. 9/11的時候, 就是Peter Jennings的報導陪伴著我們. 我記得他那時不眠不休地報導了超過兩天(甚至更多). 就好比世貿現場的救難人員一般.

過去每天晚上收看的新聞, 除了老師指定要我們看公共電視PBS的Nightly Business Report之外, 我們也一定會收看ABC Peter Jennings的新聞. 然後才轉台看NBC的其他綜藝節目.

Peter Jennings遊歷各國, 親身去體驗新聞, 而不無端製造新聞. 相較於美國其他news anchor比較American-Centric的傲慢, Peter Jennings的報導總是更具有國際觀, 更有人性的.

這是一種主播的風範. 現在很少看到了. 然而三大權威主播時代落幕, 將取而代之的, 應該就是Internet / Blog 造成新聞的長尾效應吧!

Calendar for Blog Events & Conferences

I wonder if anyone compose a calendar for blog /blogger /blogging related conferences (not including casual meet-up or gathering). I could not find one either in English or in other languages.

So far one of the most useful event list is Joi Ito's Travel Wiki. But it's too personal. For me I just missed one speech about Blog, Wiki, RSS by Michael R. Leach from Harvard Univeristy in taipei...and obviously a good one...Blogher, held in at end of July.

-->update: EVDB could be a good solution.

I believe there will be demand for such event list. Therefore I start one and wish to get helping hands from other good bloggers. If the list grows, I will move it to a wiki page. I will also collect links of historical blog events worldwide.

思科中國總裁離職

近日，有傳言稱思科中國公司總裁杜家濱近來備受總部的冷遇，即將被調離中國公司，被雪藏在香港，擔任亞太區副總。昨日，又傳來消息稱杜家濱已於8月2日離職。

我一直聽說IT公司高層被派到香港, 掛個亞太區副總的頭銜, 就是明昇暗降的意思. 看起來這是真的....

業內人士分析，換將的重要原因在於，思科在與華為一仗沒撈到便宜，且在未來中國的IPv6上沒有得到一點好處。電信運營商都在觀望3G，在基礎設施上的投資萎縮。另外在網通市場，思科面臨華為、港灣等廠商低價搶單，從而導致中國公司業績一直一蹶不振。

是的, 下一代Internet網路架構, 華為與Cisco不分軒輊. 如果以台灣的政治意識來看, 你能想像台灣的網路封包由大陸的華為路由器協助routing嗎? Sounds really stupid, but could happen...
