REAL, I mean REAL 3G (WCDMA) service is publicly available as of today through one of the major mobile operators TCC (via Chinatimes), with the numbering range 0987-abc-def. TCC offers special discount for existing 2G users to upgrade. Once the local number protability service is put in operation on October this year (powered by Neustar), user can transfer the number as well as upgrade from 2G to 3G.

TCC's original plan was to upgrade all existing 2G subscribers to 3G, but DGT, Taiwanese telecom regulator, said no because such practice may create an unfair competition for new 3G-only operators which just start from ground zero.

1. It costs TCC 2 billion, including the license, for this 3G initiative called CATCH 3!
2. The coverage is 40% at this moment. Approximately 1,000 more base stations to be built to cover the whole island.

4. Calling to existing CHT (中華電信) numbers failed. We all know what went wrong....-_-

BTW two commercials (view 1 | 2) TCC featuring "mobile secretary" has also became a hit....
Tomorrow.sg, an interesting blog initiative in Singapore (via James Seng). As ".sg" domain name opened up second level, tomorrow.sg is a good naming strategy which identifies, I think, that "tomorrow" is more fun and more of the direct voice of the Singapore netizens, whereas "today" has been determined, by the government and the media. In its about page, it says:

This could be a very good reference to realize how Taiwan plays a vital role in the value chain of global IT industry, and how we would anything to keep us stay ahead in the race.
This story tells you how we've tried to leverage innovation, just-in-time operation, and still make money. It's like "you have a good idea, the Taiwanese tells you how to make the idea a workable and profitable one".
However this article addressed more on the OEM / ODM values that the Taiwanese have brought to the market. I hope thatt there could be some portion to address that how Taiwanese make tremendous impact on personal financial service, mandarin pop-culture....
