I remembered reading some ICM registry materials in 2003 ICANN Montreal meetings and did not realize until now that they are the winning bidder for the .XXX sTLD. I put too much focus on other NORMAL bids like .mobi and .asia.
(zh-tw)ICANN最近批准成人娛樂/性產業--".XXX"頂級域名申請案.
The title of official .XXX press release from ICANN is "ICANN Moves Forward in First Phase
Commercial & Technical Negotiations with an Additional sTLD Applicant" . I somehow don't like this expression--something approved with lack of confidence.
The nature of .XXX sTLD is questionable. From the global
participation perspective, the fastest growing adult-entertainment
market should be in China / Korea / Japan but as one could see in the
application, this .XXX is primarily Canadian bid. The other question
mark is about "responsible adult-entertainment". It's more or less a PR
saying. The bottom line of that saying relies on paying $24.95 USD per
month for unlimited access to allkindagirls....It's like you are
stealing other people's money and say "I am just helping manage your
finance".
"Responsible" means that if you're making money, say it out loud!
Having said that, I am thinking of put together a bunch of gambler and sumbit .BJ .blackjack .blowjob .casino in the next around. *sigh*
My gut feeling told me that .XXX might be something similar to .PRO. I also feel sorry for the respectful ICANN board members (especially reading Joi Ito's confession) that they need to spend time dealing with application like this and I am angry that my registry paid them, even just a small portion, to process application like this.
I think .XXX a small, silent YES from ICANN; a big, noisy NO from the public.
I wish to know what would the GAC says, given ICANN requested GAC's further opinion on .asia. And most importantly, what the heck, again, is ALAC doing? I will be also very interested in learning what is the TLD deletion policy, if the .XXX is proven a failure in the future?
Last but not the lease, I won't permit my kids to access ICANN/IANA TLD page, since it becomes the future adult-entertainment index page with again, global participation on responsible adult entertainment :-(
random, love ur work and the wireless info website! ICANN truly needs more wisdom w/humor, not stupid politics....

I've just recently learned a lot about ICANN. Very interesting. I've written a tongue in cheek response to the whole thing. check it out if you have time.
