ICANN Luxembourg

I am visiting Luxembourg for the ICANN mid-year meetings. Have missed the last two, there are new faces show up in the community, and the familiar faces hold on to the microphones, as always :-)

Virtually, the coolest thing to me is that I am visiting the hometown of Skype :-)

ICANN is facing challenges on Internet governance / WSIS issues as well as on debating on Internationalized web address. In certain points one may wish all lawyers / policy makers leave the meeting room so that we could breathe for a moment. But again, it's important that voices from Internet stakeholders are heard and understood. ICANN could be the place for keeping this good mechanism.

Why .XXX?

I remembered reading some ICM registry materials in 2003 ICANN Montreal meetings and did not realize until now that they are the winning bidder for the .XXX sTLD. I put too much focus on other NORMAL bids like .mobi and .asia.

The title of official .XXX press release from ICANN is "ICANN Moves Forward in First Phase
Commercial & Technical Negotiations with an Additional sTLD Applicant" . I somehow don't like this expression--something approved with lack of confidence.

.eu is in the root

Just got this message from EUrid. (zh-tw) .eu正式開始運作, 網址與email均開通, 近日內正式開放註冊!

Another milestone has been reached in the creation of .eu. Following agreement with ICANN in March, the .eu top level domain has now been put in the internet root and, as our email address and web site demonstrate, it works!

The launch of .eu will commence before the end of 2005 with a 4-month 'sunrise' period to allow public bodies and holders of prior rights to apply for their names.

More .ASIA

James Seng, my good colleague in APEET,  said I "bullshit" about the .ASIA

...Chiao called .ASIA "more or less like a joint venture among APxx organizations". I say bullshit!

When I say more or less, I mean more or less (zh-tw 多多少少)...On this .ASIA entry I've intended to use the language carefully at this moment 'cos I know someone will be watching...

IDN

(zh-tw)knight下午寫了一篇對於twnic的小抱怨 (見文). 我發現是IDN的問題, 也就馬上回應了. 希望有幫助囉! (但好像我被列在spam karma list? 什麼玩意兒嗎!!)

I also make a comment on Joi Ito's entry regarding recent IDN development. Heated discussion going on there...

.ASIA update

Just got a note from Che-Hoo, the interim CEO of dotasia org.:

At the ICANN board meeting held in Mar del Plata on Fri (Apr 8), the ICANN board Chairman Dr. Vint Cerf said the followings publicly on stage (quoted from http://www.icann.org/meetings/mardelplata/captioning-BoD-meeting-08apr05.htm):

.EU

.EU will be soon opened up for registration, and EUrid is the registry manager. See official announcement from ICANN, also see my previous post regarding .EU~~

(Excerpt from .eu website) To register a .eu domain names you must be one of the following:

.MOBI and .JOBS

ICANN announced its decision of considering other two new TLDs, .jobs and .mobi,  for the Internet root naming system.

".mobi " is truly an interesting one. It will be something like "cnn.news.mobi" for CNN's news for handset or PDA, or "ching.name.mobi" for personal mblog or mobile P2P application.  I assume that one day this TLD, if successful, to gradually replace existing phone number structure. I also expect this TLD to be used in the PDA or smartphone in the beginning, under WiFi/WiMAX environment, instead of 3 or 4 G (or whatever howmany Gs). We'll see.

(update)Here's the report from ABC. I am also glad to hear from Ms. Ritva Siren of Nokia (met her on a bus during 2003 ICANN Rio meetings. )that the .mobi bid team is "really excited about this possibility". Congrats!!

In all ten applications, I think .post (see my previous post)and this .mobi are the most creative bids, whereas .Asia also has my support for the benefit of Asian Internet community.
