與Mozilla的中國行

上周待在北京. 主要是為了Mozilla幾位長輩的首次中國行. 除了曾來台灣的Gen Kanai之外, 我這次還安排了John Lilly (Mozilla COO) 還有Chris Beard (VP Marketing)去北京拜會一些可能合作的夥伴. 另外也和Mozilla中國的幾位大大見了面.

大陸的Browser除了微軟Internet Explorer之外, 另外受歡迎的還有以IE為基礎開發出來的Maxthon和QQ瀏覽器. 還好我們碰到許多的北京互聯網業者都用Firefox, 但是一般用戶比例仍低. 非.常.低. 原因除了IE本身的市佔率之外, 還有Maxthon積極建立的中國形象(開發者是華人), 據報導指出, Maxthon在大陸的市佔率將近三成.

Mozilla Firefox過去幾年在中國什麼都沒做. 光靠中科院軟件所支持的Mozilla中國中心, 還有幾位熱心的volunteer, 當然無法開展市場. 這也是我們此行的目的, 是一個向中國志願者, 用戶和合作夥伴的學習之旅.

Open Source也就是, 你告訴我你想要什麼, 我們才把你要的給你.

我把一些可以分享的寫下來:

• 據業界估計, 百度有將近兩成的流量是由Maxthon的用戶過來. 不過, 百度最近也在推Firefox的工具列.
• 反正Mozilla和Google很麻吉. Mozilla總部辦公室就在Google Complex對面. 當Yahoo創辦人楊智遠在Mozilla辦公室聽到Google是Firefox預設的search engine, 氣的拍桌子大罵.
• 談到Mozilla和Google的合作. 兩家公司的經營目標有一個相同, 就是要帶給用戶最好的網路經驗.  意思就是說, 如果今天在中國百度比較好用, 那麼Firefox右上角的那個search bar就應該預設百度. 講這句話的時候, 目前Yahoo和Mozilla在亞洲的合作即將各一段落, 不久的將來, search bar預設會換回Google.
• Sun (昇陽) China 有幾個人, 領Sun的薪水, 但是主要是做Mozilla產品開發. 他們主要確保Mozilla在Solaris上面的performance. 這是利益他人, 最後利益自己的模式
• 紅旗Red Flag Linux好像有一些財務上的瓶頸. 不過Red Flag去年賣了八百萬台desktop, 每一台都有裝Firefox.
• Mozilla中國社群人氣不如台灣那麼旺, 活動還是台北比較好玩. 但是因為有許多跨國公司還有內地網站的菁英份子參與加持, 感覺上比台灣還是以學生族群為主的社群, 在深度上多佔了些優勢.
• Firefox要不要改名叫Red Panda, 這樣可以多些中國特色?
• Firefox在韓國完全沒搞頭. 因為韓國政府以及銀行都用愚蠢的ActiveX作為標準. 大陸情況還好, 但是搞網頁標準測試時, 大多還是僅以IE作為唯一考量.
• 2007年底Firefox第三版會上市. 以後也會維持一年一版. 至於火的發燙的手機上網市場, 到2008年前, Mozilla可能不會有什麼作為.

未來我會持續推動兩岸在瀏覽器技術和市場的交流 <--(屁話). BTW, Mozilla會在中國設立據點, 如果你有興趣參與, 可以和我聯繫.

Mozilla: 市值五千三百萬美金的Open Source軟體專案

Mitchell Baker, Mozilla基金會的執行長在昨日給內部的電子郵件 (現在也po到她的blog), 公告了基金會2005年的完整財務報表. 截至2005年底, Mozilla有將近五千三百萬美金的收入, 其中大部分的收入來源是搜尋引擎的分帳; 在支出部份有八百二十萬美金, 下表可以看到一部份的支出科目和金額...完整的報告可以按這裡下載.  總收入中, 有約一千一百萬美金作為營運保留金; 大部分的支出花在人事薪資和設備成本上, 人事含顧問費大約有二百萬美金左右. CEO還有高階主管的薪資, 要比許多developer的薪資要來的低. 行銷費用則不到15萬美金--便能造就兩億次的Firefox下載量, 以及超過七千萬名忠實的用戶.

還是要感謝熱心的社群, 還有來自四面八方的支持者. 在這穩固的基礎上, Mozilla仍將致力於提供更好更屌的Firefox Browser, Thunderbird Email Client. 另外,還有正在研發中的Parakey專案.

乍聽之下, 也是蠻屌的! 實際上, 好像只要有7-11的地方, 應該就屬於台灣吧...:-P

Spread Firefox in the Airline Lounge

This could sound a bit crazy. But any traveller might be able to help.

Firefox is a cool and useful browser. No doubt about it. It's becoming hard for me to go back using IE6 or IE5 while in any airline lounge (or public Internet kiosk). I don't think much of them have updated their IE version, not to say installing Firefox. However, since most airline lounge offers high-speed connection, it might be a good idea to spend sometimes downloading Fx2.exe file, for yourself and for the benefit of other travellers...sort of.

So here's what I just did. I was in the Thai Airway Silk Lounge inside the new Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok. I found an available desktop PC, and did my first download. This first one was not successful since the wireless connection of this desktop PC disconnected. I then did the second download. It was perfect. I installed the software right after, but a pop-up window informed me that I do not have the access to the "Program" directory. That's ok. I installed directly under "C:".


The Firefox 2 launched perfectly after installation, with Google search in Thai. I realized that the "Latest News" RSS service in this region in provided by BBC (where in China, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea, it is provided by Y!).

One more thing, for blogger especially, before your wrap up your work and ready for boarding, you may wish to bookmark the RSS feed of your blog in the browser. "Blog marketing", yup, you can say that.

I sat in Thai Airway Lounge about 2 hours and the Internet area has been always packed with people. I do not get the chance to do this one by one. I assume that I can leave this job to others.

你能為Firefox 2.0和MozTW做的事

Firefox 2.0將於明天上市. Mozilla Links上面已經有官方非常詳盡的review, 原來是目前RC3成為正式版.

MozTW也將推出繁體中文版供用戶下載. 請大家給予Bob和Jose掌聲鼓勵!!

對於已經是Firefox用戶來說, 很多功能持續地演進變得更好用. Firefox最重視的就是使用者經驗與需求.對於還沒有使用過Firefox的朋友, Firefox 2.0是一個更好, 更快, 更安全的網頁瀏覽工具.

由於版本編號的關係, 媒體也對於FF 2.0和Web 2.0自動產生連結. 或許是好事一件.

How to Promote Firefox in Mid-Autumn Festival

This Friday would be the annual Mid-Autumn Festival (a.k.a Moon Festival) for the Chinese / Taiwanese / Korean communities. In the past there are a few "standard" ways to celebrate it, to name a few:

• Staring at the full moon for the whole night (and thinking about life and death...)
• BBQ under the moonlight (which most families in Taiwan do)
• Of course, eating lots of moon cakes and see what's the fortune note you'd get (works better if swallowing it. haha.)!

My wife and I have decided to do something different this year. Since we are helping promote Mozilla Firefox in Taiwan, obviously, during this special time of the year, we are thinking about the "How-To" stuff...as titled. : )

Step1: Get couple bags and Firefox stickers (tks to Gen Kanai). Make sure the sticker is attached to the center...sorry, not that center, a bit higher, of the bag.

Step2: Find a nearby grocery store, ask for Taiwanese Grapefruit (柚子/文旦). It's certainly the best with BBQ and moon cake. This time we've selected the top quality grapefruit from Mattau (麻豆), a small village from Southern Taiwan. We pick smaller ones, which are sweeter and juicy. They also smell good at their butt, really :-P

Step3: Pack them.

Step4: Make those bags line up as an "F", or any shape that looks good.

Step5: Give it to your friends and relatives, best with a FF CD-Rom (if for the elder). Happy Moon Festival!!

We can tell people are happy about what we do. In the Chinese / Taiwanese community, Good food / fruit is always one of the best marketing tools. Next year we might do FF moon cake, before that, we might make a FF boat for annual dragon-boat festival.
